Why Our Bake Sale Could Keep Families Off the Street

There's a quiet crisis happening in Los Angeles that most people never see.

Men and women who have fought their way through addiction — who have done the hard, painful, daily work of getting sober — are at risk of losing the one thing keeping them stable: a safe place to sleep.

At Gift of Life Recovery & Sober Living Foundation, we provide structured sober living homes for people in recovery. We offer peer support, life skills training, 12-step programs, and clinical services. We've helped dozens of residents rebuild their lives since we opened our doors in 2023.

But keeping those doors open costs money. And here's the part that surprises most people: Medi-Cal does not cover residential sober living fees.

Therapy sessions, group counseling, medication management — yes, Medi-Cal covers those clinical services for eligible residents. But the roof over their heads? The utilities? The food on the table? That falls entirely on us — and on the community.

What Happens When the Funding Runs Out

When a sober living home can't cover its monthly costs, residents don't just lose a room. They lose their support network, their structure, their accountability. For someone in early recovery, that disruption can be devastating.

We've seen it happen to other programs. We refuse to let it happen here.

That's why our residents — the same people working every day to rebuild their lives — are baking. Cookies, cakes, pies, brownies. Made with their own hands, offered to the community that has supported them.

How Your Order Makes a Difference

Every item you order from our Emergency Bake Sale on August 16 goes directly toward:

Monthly residential fees for current residents
Utilities and household supplies for our sober living homes
Program materials for life skills and reintegration classes
Emergency support for residents facing unexpected hardship

Our rates start at $675/month for a standard room. One bake sale order won't cover a month's rent — but dozens of orders, shared by a community that cares, absolutely can.

More Than a Fundraiser

What makes this bake sale different is who's doing the baking.

Our residents aren't passive recipients of charity. They're active participants in their own recovery — and in the recovery of this community. When they bake for you, they're practicing the life skills we teach: responsibility, follow-through, contribution.
